About the JCR

The JCR is the undergraduate body of the college. If you are an undergraduate studying here at St Hugh's, you are, by default, one of our JCR members.

That's not to say you have to be, though! You're allowed to opt out - just that you won't have voting rights and the JCR can't represent your say. You can still enjoy access to JCR facilities and events like bops. Free pizza in General Meetings errs on the side of illegal though.

The JCR is also used to describe our glasshouse-like room in college featuring our two pool tables and lovely Nintendo-equipped TV. It's a comfortable space for everyone to enjoy a game of Overcooked or perhaps FIFA, the classic 11pm pool, a game of cards to escape the bar after a formal, and of course post-bop Domino's. It is also conveniently located right next to the library and therefore the perfect spot for a study break which definitely won't go way past the original revision time duration.

The JCR commitee is perhaps best known for organising activities that everyone can enjoy!! This includes iconic events such as

  • bops
  • welfare teas
  • movie nights
  • themed formals
  • the rogue alpaca or whipped cream...

Of course, these events are crucial especially with the hectic intensity of university life.

The committee is primarily in charge of representing undergraduates to college, as well as your go-to for any issues. For example, the Sports and Societies Rep (an underrated role if I've ever seen one) keeps records of all the college societies, and has more recently become taken charge of a sports day with our sister college at Cambridge, Clare. The Academic Rep chases up on late collections. The Access Rep helps advertise outreach events. The DoDO writes menu reviews, and rents out the college air mattresses to anyone with a friend in town.

Core to the operations of the JCR are the Executive Committee, which is fairly straightforward: President, VP, Treasurer and Secretary. We organise the core logistics of the JCR including running the General Meetings, managing the yearly JCR budget, running the ballot and meeting with college on a regular basis.

And, perhaps most relevantly, the JCR committee give out funding every term for motions, which you can find out more about on the funding page.
